Orange Julius

Yesterday, I got an e-mail from my sister-in-law, inviting the family over for a cookout on Mother’s Day.  Of course!  I recently bought one of those crazy sprinklers, since my daughter has developed a fascination with spraying water lately.  So, we get to test out the new crazy sprinkler on her and my 3 year old nephew…so needless to say, it will be interesting and certainly enteraining.  One thing she asked me about was if I had ever made Orange Julius.  You know what?  I haven’t!  She was asking me if you could pre-make it and freeze it, and since I’d never made it before, I had no idea.  So, I started researching some recipe ideas for Orange Julius.  And folks, I have a confession to make…  I’ve never had an Orange Julius.  So, here I am!

When I was thumbing through a couple of different recipes, there were things that I did and didn’t like.  As I was telling my mom on the phone, “I think that maybe ice cream will make it a little creamier, and you wouldn’t have to add the sugar and vanilla since it’s already in the ice cream.”  Well, let’s give it a shot.  So, my daughter and I went to the grocery store last night to get some ingredients.  I promised her that she could ride in the race car shopping cart, so she could have a steering wheel to play with.  While I was digging in the milk cartons, I turned my back for about 30 seconds (not always a good idea with a toddler).  When I turned back around, she was standing straight up in the cart, smiling at me.  How in the world did that little Houdini get out of her strap?  Wiggled her way out, because the clasp was still closed.  Sneaky little thing.

I was anxious to try out this recipe, so I whipped together the ingredients to get this show on the road.  I was getting excited just by putting everything in the blender, curious to see how well this would taste.  The end result?  Delicious!  My husband was working outside in the yard, so I took a glass out to him and asked him to try it.  He took a sip.  And another sip.  And another sip.  “So, you like it?” I asked.  “Yeah, it’s really good.  Nice and light.”  Success!  Looks like my sister-in-law and I will be making this on Mother’s Day for our cookout!
