This birthday cake is a 2 layer 10 inch round red velvet cake, by special request. She wanted vanilla icing, so I mixed the standard decorator icing with canned vanilla icing for a creamier taste…and it worked!! The standard decorator icing isn’t very tasty, but looks fantastic and is easy to smooth.
So, with this icing, I made a batch of the decorator icing, and added 1 can of storebought vanilla icing to the batch. It didn’t make a tremendous difference, but is noticeable. This just may be what I have to do from now on when making decorated cakes, because the combination of the two icings makes it a little creamier. Yippee!
Decorator Icing Recipe:
2 lbs confectioners sugar (powdered sugar)
2 cups vegetable shortening
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon butter flavoring
1/2 cup water
Beat in standing mixer on medium speed for 5-6 minutes. Using hand mixer, increase time by 1-2 minutes, medium speed. This does NOT need to be stored in the refrigerator.
*Add 1 can of storebought icing (flavor of your choice) for a creamier consistency, but still easy to use for decorating.
